Parade Toys exhibition in Paris, a world of entertainment

Publish on Monday, 20 January 2014 dans Museum, exhibitions

Parade toys exhibition in Paris offers an excellent opportunity to get acquainted with the playthings inspired by the world of entertainment. There is something strangely compelling about the toys which have been inspired over the years by the interconnected media of the circus and the theatre. These bright worlds of showmanship, allure, illusion, magic and colour are particularly fertile sources for creativity and imagination, as the items on show until May 11th at the Louvre will demonstrate. This exhibition is easily accessible by direct Metro line from the Grand Hotel du Bel’Air.

Parade toys exhibition in Paris a must see event

Located in the Pavillon de Marsan western wing of the Louvre Museum, the Museum of Decorative Arts holds a vast and comprehensive collection of artefacts. Around 200 of the most fascinating are on display in Parade, an exhibition devoted to the toys and games inspired by the circus and theatre from the late 19th century until the present day. On special loan from a private collection especially for this event is a large selection of mechanical clowns. Theatrical masks, puppet families, model circuses and play theatres are among the items on display and the exhibition brings out their slightly disturbing, as well as their amusing, qualities.

Also featured are works by artists, photographers and film makers which focus on the world of childhood and toys using comical figures and animated images. The artist Jean Francois Guillon has created three installations especially for Parade. Two of these are related to shadow theatre and one is an audio piece. There are also specially designed games based around elements such as typography, light and silhouettes to add to the atmosphere of whimsy, strangeness and charm.
