Paris 1900 exhibition is at the Petit Palais until August 17th. The late 19th and early 20th centuries in Paris constituted a glorious era now known as the Belle Epoque. During these years the city was held as a shining example of sophistication which the rest of the world could only attempt to emulate.

In the midst of this was held the 1900 Universal Exposition, a grand event celebrating the considerable achievements of the 19th century and looking forward to the wonders that the 20th would bring. Around fifty million visitors flocked to Paris to be amazed at the many artistic and scientific innovations, which included the first talking movies.

A full 114 years later the opportunity is available to experience some of the enchantment of that time. Paris 1900, The City Of Entertainment is an exhibition mounted in the Petit Palais, which itself was constructed to house displays of French art during the 1900 Universal Exposition. Some 600 items are on show, including photographs, art, furniture, posters, jewellery, clothing and films.

You can follow a similar thematic journey to the one taken by the visitors of 1900 through six ‘pavilions’, including one displaying the beauty of the Art Nouveau movement which so characterised the period and which includes art by Lalique and Mucha amongst others, and another exploring Paris fashion, which was then at its zenith. This is the ideal opportunity to fully understand the cultural blossoming that occurred at this time.
